With the recent release of the DSi there has seen a great deal of discussion and speculation. The official word from Team Cyclops is that The DSi is NOT compatible with CycloDS Evolution or ANY other similar device.

However, a recent video now demonstrates that for some time they have had a working test setup that is capable of running CycloDS Evolution on the Nintendo DSi.

“We must stress however that this is part of our research only; there is still a great deal of work to be done before we can even decide if a DSi compatible device is viable or not.”

It is only of matter of time! Check out the video and see what we can expect in the near future.

Note: The CycloDS Evolution is currently not compatible with the Nintendo DSi

I came across a very interesting post within the romulation forum today and thought I’d share it with you. The forum discusses the experiences of a guy who goes by the name of Nightroad. His post was in order to answer a question posted by someone who was seeking advice on the pros and cons of the R4 DS Revolution and CycloDS Evolution

What are the pros and cons of each one? And explain why you think it is better.

Below is the reply that Nightroad posted.

I own a CycloDS With an 8GB Kingston Micro SDHC Card, and a EZ Flash 3-1 Expansion Cart. I can say from experience that I have had NO problem with my CycloDS. It does everything it advertises and I’ve been able to play every singe ROM I’ve tried without any additional software. (Except GBA Roms with 1024 Save type, but that was easy to fix).

My brother bought one of the new “Fake” R4. They’re not really fakes, they’re clones of the R4 with SDHC support, made by some of the R4 team after they split. I gave my brother my old 2GB Kingston SD card and it plays ok. Claims to have many of the features the CycloDS has, but I haven’t messed with it enough to see. Had trouble playing Sonic The Dark brotherhood (Would not play at all). My CycloDS plays it just fine without any problems.

The R4 is a little more challenging to work too. My brother had to download and copy files to his to get it to work. The CycloDS is basically plug and play. It takes care of the rest.

Updating the CycloDS couldn’t be easier. Copy the firmware update to your SD card, boot up and it updates automatically and deletes the firmware update. If you get a bad firmware update, you can do a reset using a button combination.

I can’t say much bad about the R4. Doesn’t have some of the compatibility the CycloDS has and all it’s pre-built cheats are in Japanese, so you kinda can’t jump right into your favorite game very easily. CycloDS came with a lot of pre-built *english* Cheats.

There’s A LOT of crap on youtube and various gaming forums about the R4. People getting fakes, the card breaking, stop working, or the dreaded “Loading…” bug that a majority of problems seem to be.

These cards are something you have to be careful with. It’s like buying a used car. It really is worth it to take the extra money and buy something you KNOW is reliable vs. something that’s questionable.

I vote for a CycloDS. Has never given me problems and does what it says it’ll do.

So, to conclude.

There are more R4 clones on the market. I have done some research and discovered that the original manufactures of the R4 no longer produces them. It is hard to get your hands on an original, but they do exist. I have also had my own personal experience with the R4 and CycloDS. In short, I’m not sure if it was a clone or an original, but it doesn’t work any more. The funny thing is the top selling card on Amazon UK, is the R4. I doubt that it is an original, it is a top seller for one reason. The R4 is a well known name and was the card that paved the way for the rest, and this is being used by many online retailers to sell clone.

The CycloDS Evolution is easier to use and the firmware is easier to update. The CycloDS Evolution works right out of the box, whereas the R4 requires you to download and install software before you can you it and to put the icing on the cake the firmware hasn’t been upgraded for some time.

The CycloDS Evolution comes with a cheat engine which will allow you to cheat within games. Most importantly, if you download games, the CycloDS is 100% compatible with every Nintendo DS game ever released and will continue to be 100% compatible with future releases because of the continuous support and firmare updates. Compatiblity is currently about 90% for the R4.

Nuff said.

If you would like to purhcase a CycloDS Evolution Today.

The new Nintendo DS variant called the Nintendo DSi was announced during the Nintendo Conference today in Tokyo, Japan.

Introducing The Nintendo DSi

The Nintendo DSi will be “the third version of the Nintendo DS handheld”, This new handheld will contain two 0.3 megapixel [ 640 x 480 resolution] cameras, one camera on the internal hinge pointed towards the user and the other on the outside of the shell. With these cameras users can add effects like face composition that combine faces, distortion, superimposing, face altering, expressions and adding picture frames. The Nintendo DSi will be 12% thinner than the DS lite, but the screen will be 0.25 inches bigger than DS lite (3.25 inches as opposed to the previous 3 inches) both DSi and DS Lite have a display resolution which incorporates 260,000 colours. Charging time for DSi is 2 hours and 30 minutes and that means shorter than DS which needs 3 hours for charging.

The DSi is equipped with an internal memory and an SD memory card slot as external storage. With all the features above making it possible to take pictures and syncethe pictures to the Nintendo Wii’s Photo Channel. DSi has the capability to play AAC audio file , and via the mic it’s possible to record sounds up to 10 seconds. With a built-in opera internet browser, games can be download from an online store called the DSWare Shop and stored on the DSi. The pricing categories for DSiWare applications will either be free, 200, 500, or 800 Nintendo Points. The DSi customers will get 1000 points for free to spend at the DSi Shop until March 2010.

The Nintendo DSi will first be released in Japan on November 1, 2008 for ¥18,900 (tax included) or around US$180, and will be available in two colors matte black and white. The Nintendo DSi will be released in 2009 for the rest of the world. Rose Lappin, President of Nintendo Australia Pty Ltd has not commented about the NDSi but it is expected to be released around the same time as Europe, as they are both part of the PAL region. Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo America claimed that sales of DS Lite in the United States were still strong, so introducing the DSi to the USA is not a high priority, and will not be available in North America until after April 2009.

Two months ago, I wrote a blog post about the rumour and speculation of a new handheld from Nintendo with dual touch screen functionality to be released sometime next year.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei Net revealed today on their website that part of the rumour can be put to rest. Nintendo will release a successor to the DS Lite and much earlier than next year.

By the end of this year the new DS will be on the store shelves. The report highlights three new features; improved wireless capabilities, music playback (MP3) and integrated camera. The camera could be used by certain games to include and use pictures within gameplay.

Unfortunately, like the DS Lite, the new DS will see a Japanese only release. Nikkei Net indicated that they believe that the new handheld will go on sale for around 20,000yen ($189).

When I bought my CycloDS Evolution in June, I was lucky enough to find a fantastic three part video series made by videogamegroupie.com The YouTube videos which I discovered on Google, helped me to convert and transfer videos to my Cyclo DS Evolution.

The most common questions that I get regarding the Cyclo DS Evolution are based around how to tap into the multimedia player capabilities. The answer is a multimedia player for the Nintendo DS called Moonshell. Moonshell is a hombrew application that will enable you to read text files, view images, play audio and video.

Moonshell supports DPG video files, MP3 / OGG / MOD / SPC / MDX (no PCM) / GBS / HES / NSF / XM / MIDI / low bit rate AAC audio / non-progressive JPEG / BMP / GIF / PNG images, and text files. MoonShell plays fullscreen videos at 20fps and widescreen videos at 24fps, with joint stereo sound at a sample rate of 32.768KHz.

Both screens on the DS are used, with the bottom screen allowing file selection and control via touchscreen. The integrated plug-in system provides extensibility of program features. To add a feature, the plug-in files are simply copied to the appropriate folder. In order to function as a media player, several plug-in files are distributed with the software.

How to install Moonshell on Cyclo DS Evolution

The following video will show you how to install Moonshell on to the Cyclo DS Evolution. (Please note that the video is supported by an ad which will pop up in another window when you select play. Return to this page and press play again to view the video)

In short:

Download Moonshell from HERE

Extract to top directory of the microSD

Enjoy

Nintendo has denied rumours from industry sources outside Nintendo that a dual touch screen handheld will be released, as an updated model to its predecessor, the Nintendo DS Lite.
